Community-led backpack drives are offering students essential supplies ahead of the school year. The New York Restoration Project (NYRP) is hosting three 'Back-to-School Backpack Bonanza' events in August, where children can receive free backpacks and school materials. Additional events include a bookbag giveaway by RiseBoro and a free family fun day hosted by State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud. NYRP aims to support underserved populations, helping lessen financial burdens associated with school supplies, ensuring educational needs are met in the community.
Mike Horowitz, the project's public programming coordinator, stated, "If you look at any supply lists that schools put out, when you add up the cost of all the items, it's a lot."
The organization's gardens help support students in these communities and ensure "teachers and administrators can do their best work."
