On January 15, 2025, the Coalition for Better Communities celebrated the closure of the migrant shelter at Floyd Bennett Field, attributing the decision to extensive community activism rather than city leadership. Established in 2023 to house asylum seekers, the shelter faced significant opposition from locals due to safety and environmental concerns. Community leaders gathered to share their victories and call for accountability from the National Park Service, emphasizing the importance of unity and persistence in local advocacy efforts against displacement and inadequate governmental responses.
This closure is the result of two years of tireless community organizing, it wasn't the mayor. It wasn't the City Council. It was this community.
Today is monumental. The tents behind us are a stark reminder of the many months we stood together, facing freezing temperatures and floods.
They promised upgrades to this park and fairness to our residents. We need answers, and we will ensure they deliver.
