DanceAfrica's Artistic Director Abdel Salaam immerses himself in the culture of the chosen African country before selecting a traditional dance troupe for the festival.
Abdel Salaam chose Cameroon for DanceAfrica, inspired by the survival of indigenous groups like the Baka and Twa in the rainforest for 50,000 years, seen as ancestors of the human family.
Abdel Salaam's journey to Cameroon included harsh elements like quicksand and fire ants, which he interpreted as the environment's protection for survival, aiming to bring such experiences to DanceAfrica.
