"It's a way to commemorate my parents' love for their children as well as their capacity for building and supporting our community," said Bowens via email.
"My mother says, 'You can do anything that you put your mind to,'" recalled Bowens. "And then I kind of extended it to say, you can't do it alone," as you need a village to raise a child, she added.
