Ray Ferrier, who served as BRLA president from 1977-1978, opened the ceremony by reflecting on the organization's history. He explained, 'The BRLA was formed in 1954 by a group of local attorneys who wanted to meet and discuss various issues they were experiencing in the practice of law.' This foundational goal has been the touchstone for the association's growth from its humble beginnings in local law offices to a robust community of legal professionals.
Ferrier shared anecdotes about early meetings held at the Hotel Gregory and later at Guy's Classic Italian Restaurant, noting, 'The tradition of hosting dinner meetings began in the 1970s.' He highlighted a pivotal moment when the organization decided to welcome women members, which faced resistance initially but in hindsight, 'it was the best thing that ever happened to the Bay Ridge Lawyers.'
Former president John Bonina expressed the ongoing sense of continuity among BRLA members, stating, 'Every single one of the people here today contributes to a legacy that is enriching our practice of law and fostering mutual support.' This sentiment underscores the camaraderie that has defined the organization and its collective commitment to professional development.
