Claire Valdez launched a congressional campaign for NY-7 to seek the seat of retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez. Valdez is a Democratic socialist with ties to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and is expected to be endorsed by Mamdani and the DSA. Valdez represents Assembly District 37, covering Long Island City, Woodside, Sunnyside, Maspeth and Ridgewood, with significant overlap into NY-7 neighborhoods in northern Brooklyn. The campaign centers on labor organizing, economic justice, opposition to war and genocide, taxing the rich, universal healthcare and childcare, and strengthened workers' rights. Valdez is a former union organizer emphasizing working-class experience and will face Antonio Reynoso in the Democratic primary.
