'Anora,' with Brighton Beach as its setting, wins Best Picture at 97th Academy Awards
Briefly

At the 97th Academy Awards, Brighton Beach gained prominence as the backdrop for the Best Picture winner, "Anora," which also took home four other Oscars. The film, directed by Sean Baker, revolved around the story of a young stripper, played by Mikey Madison, who elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch. The Academy's choice of "Anora" for top honors signals a shift towards a younger, more edgy selection process, reflecting broader changes in the film industry and audience preferences.
BRIGHTON BEACH- BROOKLYN, AND BRIGHTON BEACH IN PARTICULAR, were in the spotlight at Sunday's 97th Academy Awards as the setting for Best Picture winner "Anora." The film amassed five Oscar statuettes, for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Mikey Madison), Best Director (Sean Baker), Best Writing/Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Baker also became the first person to win four solo awards for a single movie. In the film's "Cinderella story", Mikey Madison plays title character Anora Mikheeva, a 23-year-old stripper from Brighton Beach.
The New York Times, in its coverage of the Oscars, observed that "Anora" was a "nontraditional choice that reflected an academy in transition - younger, edgier and not terribly concerned about ticket sales."
