25 inmates and associates face major charges during crime swoop at Brooklyn jail
Briefly

A group of 25 individuals, including inmates, former correctional officers, and accomplices, have been charged with various crimes connected to violence and smuggling at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). The U.S. Attorney's Office revealed that the charges encompassed serious offenses such as assaults and attempts to introduce contraband into the facility. The actions threaten the safety and security of the MDC, notorious for its past issues with inmate conditions. Notably, one incident involved a gang member smuggling ceramic scalpels ingeniously concealed inside a snack bag.
The safety and security of our federal detention facilities is paramount, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York John Durham said, "As alleged, in several separate charging instruments, inmates viciously attacked fellow detainees and... engaged in fraud schemes while detained."
Angel Villafane, a member of the gang Valentine Avenue Crew, smuggled a ball full of ceramic scalpels into jail using a bag of Doritos.
It is unclear right now if the bag was empty or what flavor Doritos occupied, but the actions undermine the order and security of MDC-Brooklyn.
The MDC has come under heavy criticism in recent years for alleged inhumane conditions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic five years ago.
