A fatal chain-reaction crash occurred at the intersection of Avenue S and West 11th Street in Gravesend, Brooklyn at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday. An FDNY firetruck with lights and sirens activated collided with a Ford Transit van, causing the firetruck to cross into the westbound lane where it struck an Access-A-Ride coach bus. The bus subsequently hit a Lexus SUV, and the firetruck struck two parked vehicles before stopping. Thirteen people were hospitalized, including six firefighters, three civilians from the van and bus, and four others. A 78-year-old Access-A-Ride passenger, Placido Dandrea, was transported in critical condition and died. All other victims remained in stable condition. The NYPD continues investigating the incident to determine which vehicle had right of way.
