Venomous snake found in Market Basket bananas in New Hampshire
Briefly

An Ornate Cat-eyed snake was discovered in a banana shipment at Market Basket in Manchester, NH. Likely arriving from Central or South America, the snake was unharmed and has been placed with Rainforest Reptile Shows, a nonprofit organization that handles various reptile species. Rainforest's VP, Mack Ralbovsky, mentioned such incidents are rare, occurring about three to four times annually, and reassured the public that the situation posed no risk. The snake is currently being cared for and is expected to adapt well in its new environment.
In general, these situations are uncommon, but they do happen... we actually get probably three to four calls a year for different animals that are actually in shipments.
It's not something that a consumer really has to be concerned about; this animal never even made it out to the area where the general public was.
By his estimate, the organization has about 300 reptiles in its care, or upwards of about 1,000 animals once invertebrates and birds are factored in.
Native to places like Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia, Ornate Cat-eyed snakes are nocturnal and primarily feed on amphibians and lizards.
