He allegedly assaulted police officers working a construction detail and attempted to steal a firearm, which resulted in a struggle during which he accidentally shot himself in the foot. Haughton, reportedly experiencing a mental health issue, faces multiple charges including assaulting an officer and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was subsequently arrested and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and witnesses played a key role in assisting police during the incident.

BPD Commissioner Michael Cox indicated that Haughton seemed to be experiencing a mental health crisis during the altercation that led to his self-inflicted injury.
