Police arrest man who allegedly robbed Market Basket, assaulted workers

Arthur Bettencourt, 59, was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery and assault in Chelmsford after police responded to a robbery at Market Basket. He reportedly stole money and assaulted two employees during the incident. Officers quickly located Bettencourt within three minutes using K-9 units and aerial surveillance, finding him hiding in a pile of leaves. A speedy response and thorough investigation quickly led us to our suspect, Chelmsford Police Chief Colin Spence said. Officers collaborated and captured the suspect without injury.
Three minutes into the search with two pairs of officers and K-9s, the suspect, identified as Bettencourt, was found lying in a pile of leaves.
Bettencourt was charged with one count of unarmed robbery and two counts of assault and battery, as he assaulted two employees during the theft.
An initial investigation suggested Bettencourt assaulted an employee before stealing a bag of money, and assaulted a second employee who attempted to stop his escape.
