North Shore birder has advice as car mirrors get woodpeckered

Residents in Rockport are facing challenges due to a pileated woodpecker that is damaging vehicles by pecking at their side-view mirrors. Local resident Janelle Favaloro noted that her own truck was affected, part of a larger pattern that has seen the bird damaging at least nine vehicles. Birding expert Jay Frontiero explained that the woodpecker likely mistakes its reflection for a competing male. He advised residents to adjust their mirrors downwards for a temporary solution as this behavior coincides with the woodpecker's mating season, which lasts from late March to early July.
We have a vandal in the neighborhood. He was described as 18- to 24-inches tall, wearing black and white with a red hat.
Birder Jay Frontiero suggested that people in the area tilt their side-view mirrors down to avoid attracting the woodpecker.
Pileated woodpeckers often peck more during their mating season, which typically runs from late March to early July.
This woodpecker has reportedly damaged nine vehicles around Rockport, causing a stir among residents.
