Mayor Michelle Wu defended Boston's immigration policies during a congressional hearing, emphasizing the city's immigrant history and commitment to safety. Despite tough questions from Republican lawmakers, she highlighted Boston's 40% decrease in homicides, asserting that the police collaborate with federal law enforcement on serious crimes, but lack authority to detain individuals without warrants. Wu reiterated that accountability exists for all, regardless of immigration status, fighting the narrative that immigrants increase crime in the city.
"She stood up for the city and refused to cower in the face of threats and smears," one of more than 1,700 respondents said.
"If you commit a crime in Boston, regardless of your immigration status, you will be held accountable. And if you are a violent criminal, you have no place in our community."
