A man suffering a mental health crisis stole a gun from a Boston Police Department officer near Massachusetts General Hospital and shot himself in the foot during the struggle. The incident occurred in a busy area at 8:42 a.m., affecting local traffic. Quick action from bystanders and additional officers helped detain the suspect, who was then taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. BPD Commissioner Michael Cox praised the efforts of those involved and noted that the man's mental health status might affect his arraignment.
These are life-threatening situations, when you have firearms involved and particularly when they're in the hands of someone who doesn't necessarily know what they're doing.
We want to express our sincere gratitude for the assistance of the people who were there, present, to help.
