Johnny Joyce, born in County Galway in 1936, emigrated to Boston at age 19 and became known for preserving Connemara traditions in the United States. He devoted his life to Irish language, music, dance, and currach racing, helping build and sustain a vibrant Irish cultural community in Boston. At 90 years old, he was credited with leaving a lasting legacy on the city’s Irish cultural landscape. He supported Cumann na Gaeilge i mBoston and contributed to the Boston and the Irish Language project. He shared stories, language, and heritage with generations on both sides of the Atlantic through dances, cultural gatherings, and currach races. He died peacefully at home on May 17, 2026, surrounded by family.
"It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Johnny Joyce, Inis Bearachain, Connemara and Boston. Born in County Galway in 1936 and emigrating to Boston in 1955, Johnny devoted his life to preserving and promoting the traditions of Connemara through Irish language, music, dance, and currach racing. As a keen card player, Johnny rarely missed playing 25 here at the Centre and he was a cherished member of our Dorchester Aging Well program."
"A proud supporter of Cumann na Gaeilge i mBoston and a valued contributor to the Boston and the Irish Language project, Johnny shared the stories, language, and heritage of his island home with generations on both sides of the Atlantic. Through countless dances, cultural gatherings, and currach races, he helped build and sustain a vibrant Irish community in Boston."
"Johnny's warmth, humour, and dedication to Irish culture leave a lasting legacy in the Boston Irish Community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
