Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden publicly criticized ICE for detaining a man, Wilson Martell-Lebron, mid-trial, calling the act "unacceptable and unprofessional." Hayden argues that ICE's actions are detrimental to public safety, claiming they hinder his ability to hold offenders accountable. The case at hand involves Martell-Lebron, charged with felony offenses, who was arrested outside the Boston Municipal Court after ICE identified him as an undocumented immigrant. Hayden emphasized that such practices contradict ICE's public safety claims and pose challenges to local law enforcement efforts.
ICE routinely claims that their actions are improving public safety in Boston. And I'm here today to tell you, and to say, that they are doing the exact opposite.
My office did not know ICE agents would detain a man mid-trial. That specific incident is unacceptable and unprofessional. These actions undermine public safety.
