Canton's Police Chief Helena Rafferty will retire at the end of June, after a historically significant tenure as the town’s first female chief. Her time was marred by controversies, notably the handling of the ongoing Karen Read murder case, which drew scrutiny on the department's practices. Further complicating her legacy, Rafferty was involved in an incident where she struck a pedestrian with a police vehicle. The town is set to appoint an interim chief while engaging a consulting firm for a comprehensive search for her successor.
This was an unfortunate accident, she wrote at the time. Upon further reflection and considering the amount of reflection and consideration I have given this situation, I recognize that it has impacted more than just the individual involved.
As the first female police chief in our town's history, Chief Rafferty has been a trailblazer and earned the respect of her colleagues, town officials, and residents alike.
