The recently inaugurated Fall River/New Bedford MBTA Commuter Rail line connects communities in southeastern Massachusetts to Boston for the first time in 65 years. A project decades in the making, it faced numerous delays and required significant investment, totaling billions of dollars. The rail line features six new stops and highlights the state's commitment to improving transportation. Governor Maura Healey emphasized the importance of this project for the South Coast region and expressed pride in delivering it despite past challenges, marking a significant milestone for local transit infrastructure.
After years of delays, we took this challenge head on and delivered for the people of the South Coast - and our entire state will benefit.
The rail—which goes to Taunton, New Bedford, and Fall River—has been in the works for decades and has cost billions of dollars to complete.
The extended line has been a long time coming; former Gov. Bill Weld predicted service in 1997 and a commitment of billions was made over the decades.
Now, with a $1.1 billion investment behind it, the Middleborough/Lakeville line extended to Taunton, New Bedford, and Fall River was renamed the Fall River/New Bedford line.
