The Boston Red Sox have announced the release of 39-year-old pitcher Adam Ottavino following his decision to trigger an opt-out clause in his contract. Ottavino, a veteran with 14 MLB seasons, underperformed in spring training, allowing six runs in just five innings. Despite a decent previous stint, his recent performance with the Mets showed a decline that prompted the Red Sox to settle for a minor league deal. Meanwhile, fellow player Masataka Yoshida will start the season on the injured list due to ongoing adjustments in his throwing program.
Ottavino, 39, is a veteran of 14 MLB seasons who previously pitched for the Red Sox back in 2021. In that year, he posted a 4.21 ERA with a 3.96 FIP in 62 innings.
Unfortunately, Ottavino's results declined with the club as time went on; last year, he managed an ERA of 4.34, which was 9% worse than league average.
His struggles during camp were evident, allowing six runs over five innings and issuing free passes to five of the 25 batters he faced, resulting in his release.
With a minor league deal and unsuccessful spring, Ottavino now seeks an opportunity on the open market for a potential path to the majors.
