"Yesterday was the deadline to add prospects to the 40-man roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft, a bizarre mechanism whereby teams can swipe veteran minor leaguers from each other, under the condition that the selecting team needs to then keep that player on the big league roster for the remainder of the following season. The Red Sox added three minor leaguers to the roster:"
"He was one of the pleasant surprises of the 2025 minor league season, putting up a 3.61 ERA and striking out 86 hitters in 82.1 innings in Portland before he was promoted to Worcester in the second half of the season. He was moved to the bullpen with Worcester, both to manage his workload and in anticipation of a possible late-season call up to help the big league club."
Teams must add prospects to the 40-man roster by a deadline to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft, which permits teams to select veteran minor leaguers if the selecting club keeps the player on its big league roster the following season. The Red Sox added three pitchers from AAA Worcester: David Sandlin, Shane Drohan, and Tyler Uberstine. Sandlin posted a 3.61 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 82.1 innings in Portland, earned promotion to Worcester, was shifted to the bullpen, and remains a potential starter likely to debut as a 2026 depth call-up. Drohan was previously taken in a Rule 5 selection, returned after injury and struggles, posted an ERA below three in 11 starts in Worcester in 2025, but missed nearly three months with a forearm issue and was not used by the major league club in September.
