The Red Sox have had to deal with significant pitching challenges at the start of the season due to injuries to three regular starters. Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito are making progress through rehab assignments, with Bello potentially returning as soon as April 16. Kutter Crawford, however, is still far from returning, potentially missing games until May or June. In the interim, Richard Fitts and Sean Newcomb are filling in during this difficult period for the team. The prospect of a six-man rotation may arise once the injured pitchers return.
While Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito are both working their way back to the majors on rehab assignments, Kutter Crawford appears to be well behind the other two.
Bello could return to the rotation after just three rehab outings means he could be back on the mound in Boston as soon as April 16 against the Rays.
Richard Fitts and southpaw Sean Newcomb have been filling in at the back of the club's rotation behind Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, and Walker Buehler.
Crawford, 29, made all 33 of his starts for the Red Sox last year but pitched through knee issues that compromised his effectiveness.
