Red Sox Notes: Contreras, Casas, Rafaela
"The Red Sox landed an impact bat in Willson Contreras on Sunday. The longtime catcher made the move to first base last season, and that's expected to stick in Boston. " We see him primarily at first base, maybe some DH opportunities. But the more that we can get his bat in the lineup, the better off we're going to be," chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters, including Sean McAdam of MassLive.com."
"Contreras bounced around a bit when he first came up with the Cubs, even logging innings at third base and the corner outfield spots, but spent the majority of his time behind the plate. He served as Chicago's primary catcher from 2017 through 2021. Conteras split his time fairly equally between catcher and DH in 2022. He went to St. Louis in 2023 and continued to play both catcher and DH somewhat evenly."
Willson Contreras joined the Boston Red Sox and is projected to play primarily at first base with some designated hitter starts to keep his bat in the lineup. Contreras spent most of his early career as a catcher with the Cubs from 2017-2021, then split time between catcher and DH in 2022 and 2023 before transitioning to primary first baseman last season with 119 starts despite only 11 career appearances at first prior. Defensive metrics were mixed (+4 Outs Above Average, -1 Defensive Runs Saved). The 33-year-old has posted a wRC+ of at least 124 in four straight seasons. Boston returns catchers Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong as the primary backstops.
