Red Sox 9, Guardians 1; Sox win nail-biter in a rout
Sonny Gray threw six relatively clean innings and struck out seven while issuing three walks that raised his pitch count. Parker Messick entered with the seventh-best bWAR among pitchers and allowed two runners on base in three of his five innings, but Boston removed him early. Boston scored eight of nine runs against Cleveland’s bullpen, including a run in the ninth after Guardians manager Stephen Vogt effectively signaled a bullpen change. Connor Wong’s apparent homer in the sixth was downgraded to a double on replay, and he later drove in a run during Boston’s nine-run ninth inning. Jarren Duran hit a three-run homer, while Caleb Durbin added a sac fly to start the scoring and an insurance RBI on a double in the eighth.
