What I believe is happening here is that the Red Sox are simply saying 'we don't think he's going to Toronto. We don't think Detroit is going to sign him... and we are going to leverage this...' - Ken Rosenthal on the Red Sox's strategy regarding Alex Bregman.
The Red Sox entered this season with one big goal: improve starting pitching. Big name after big name signed and the Sox were either not involved or outbid.
They want to pay their top-end starting pitcher for as many years in his 20s as possible, which affects their strategy on positional players.
So Bregman to second base? Where they have some depth of young players any of whom could claim the job by the end of 2025? So dumb a signing it's brilliant?
