The Boston Red Sox are dealing with first base challenges following Triston Casas's season-ending injury, prompting manager Alex Cora to explore options like Kristian Campbell. While utility player Romy Gonzalez is anticipated to return soon, he initially took on the role but faced a setback with a quad injury. Other players, including Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard, are currently sharing the position. Despite Campbell's lack of experience at first base, the Sox are considering including him as they navigate this period of transition.
"Looking for options," manager Alex Cora said about Campbell's pregame work. "... It can take 10 days, 15 days, a month, two months, but we started the process."
Gonzalez, a utility infielder, got first crack at the position after the Casas injury. He was sidelined by a quad contusion a week later.â
The Sox approached Rafael Devers about taking first base reps. He indicated he wasn't willing to do so, publicly expressing frustration with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow."
Campbell has no collegiate or professional experience as a first baseman. He has played mostly second but also has experience at both left side infield positions and all three outfield spots.
