Game No. 40: Rays at Red Sox - Payton Tolle takes the mound in emotional Mother's Day outing
"Lineup wise, it's mostly what we've been seeing since Roman Anthony went on the IL, but with one key change. Mickey Gasper, the guy who replaced Anthony on the roster gets the start at catcher."
Payton Tolle will pitch on Mother’s Day after Mother Nature altered the schedule, moving his start away from the two-year anniversary of his mother’s death. The start gives him a chance to honor his mother’s influence while also backing up his previous seven shutout innings against the Tigers. Another strong performance could place him alongside Connelly Early’s recent seven shutout innings and help the Red Sox develop a deeper, more effective rotation if Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, and Ranger Suarez return healthy. The Rays counter with Nick Martinez, who has been difficult to hit this season, allowing two runs or fewer in all seven starts and leading the team in WAR. The lineup remains largely familiar, with Mickey Gasper starting at catcher after Roman Anthony went on the IL.
