The Twins have acquired former top catching prospect Diego Cartaya from the Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-hander Jose Vasquez, bolstering their catching depth as Cartaya still possesses defensive tools despite his offensive struggles.
As recently as two years ago, Cartaya was a consensus top-20 prospect in the entire sport. However, his offensive development has stalled out in the upper minors, leading to mixed evaluations of his potential.
Though his bat hasn't progressed, scouting reports in recent seasons have praised improved glovework from the 6'3", 219-pound Cartaya, who has made notable gains with framing, receiving and blocking.
The Twins already have an above-average starter in Ryan Jeffers and a glove-first backup in Christian Vazquez, making Cartaya a potential depth option who can continue to develop in the minors.
