The Oakland Athletics are exploring the option of using Tyler Soderstrom as a backup catcher this season. Manager Mark Kotsay noted the potential bench flexibility it could create, with Shea Langeliers continuing as the starting catcher. Soderstrom, initially valued for his batting prowess, has struggled against big league pitching, leading to considerations for positional versatility. With experience as a first baseman, the A's face a decision on Soderstrom's role, especially after their previous season's underwhelming use of his catching skills.
What we talked about with Tyler is continuing to keep that skill set. It gives us an opportunity to have a player that provides maybe a role for us that would allow maybe another bench spot.
Soderstrom was drafted as a bat-first catching prospect out of high school in 2020. His bat pushed him quickly through the minor leagues.
The A's clearly didn't feel his glove was up to par last year. They kept McCann on the major league roster as the backup all season.
