The Massachusetts Housing Appeals Committee intervened in a controversial affordable housing project in Weston, declaring that the local zoning board's permit denial lacked justification and did not align with local needs. The project, put forward by 518 South Ave. LLC, aims to build 180-200 apartments, a quarter of which are designated as below-market rate. Residents expressed concerns about its size, potential environmental impacts, and safety issues, prompting the zoning board to reject it. However, the Appeals Committee ordered the board to grant the permit and refund nearly $13,000 to the developer.
This project is too big for our small town and will have too many adverse consequences, including environmental dangers, child-safety concerns, and traffic flow issues.
The Weston Zoning Board denied the permit stating the project as proposed represents a direct threat to public health and safety.
