The Catholic Diocese of Fall River sold two plots of land in Nantucket to summer resident Jeff Cappo without listing them on the market first. The Catholic church aimed to sell these properties but engaged in private negotiations after receiving a competitive offer. Communications director John Kearns stated that the buyer did not receive special treatment, and no other offers were made. The sale involved applications to build a large new home on the property, raising concerns about the methods and implications of the transaction.
"The intent had been to put the properties on the market for sale," said John Kearns, the director of communications for the diocese, in a statement emailed to the Nantucket Current.
"Prior to their listing, however, the Diocese of Fall River was approached by the interested buyer who made a competitive offer for the parcels. Negotiations began, and an agreement was reached for the sale of the land."
"The buyer received no inside information or any special treatment throughout the process, and no other would-be buyer reached out to the Diocese with interest in the property."
"Realtor.com® uncovered two applications submitted to Nantucket's Historic District Commission to build a new 5,100-square-foot home and garage on the 46 Milestone Road property."
