The Healey-Driscoll administration announced a substantial energy savings initiative for Massachusetts residents, starting with a $50 credit on electric bills in April. This plan aims to lower energy costs by a total of $220 million and save $5.8 billion over the next five years. The initiative includes creating a new discount rate for moderate-income residents and an expansion of existing discounts for lower-income customers. Additionally, the administration plans to streamline utility bill costs and introduce measures to stabilize billing fluctuations, alongside an upcoming energy affordability and independence bill.
"I know that's not a ton of money compared to what people have been paying, but it's something," said Healey at the press conference in Lowell. "It is something and every dollar counts."
"I, too, was surprised by my gas bill this last couple of months," said the energy and environmental affairs secretary Rebecca Tepper at the press conference in Lowell. "My husband actually thought it was a mistake."
