Rex Heuermann, the suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer, has finalized his divorce from Asa Ellerup after she filed shortly after his arrest for multiple murders in July 2023. Ellerup's attorney confirmed the completion of the divorce documents, emphasizing her concerns for their two children given the likelihood of Heuermann's long-term imprisonment. The divorce settlement is under judicial review, while Heuermann remains not guilty and awaits trial, with legal disputes ongoing regarding DNA evidence found at crime scenes.
"We finalized all the divorce documents submitted to the court last night," said Ellerup's attorney, Robert Macedonio, said outside a Suffolk County courtroom.
Ellerup has to worry about protecting her two children with the likelihood that he's never gonna get out of jail."
"She has a difficult time throughout this whole process believing the husband that she was married to for 29 years now was capable of committing these horrific acts," he added.
A judge will now review the divorce settlement and must sign off to make the split official.
