Casey Mittelstadt was acquired from Colorado in the Charlie Coyle deal and initially generated uncertainty about his role. The 27-year-old has flourished after a move from center to wing, finding greater comfort and reduced defensive pressure. Mittelstadt returned from a three-week knee injury to score against the Rangers and assisted Morgan Geekie on a power-play goal in a 3-2 shootout win over Detroit. He scored the lone shootout goal with a slick backhand over Cam Talbot. Mittelstadt has recorded 5-6-11 in 17 games and shows improved board play, puck retrieval, and playmaking.
