A guerilla street sign appeared near Boston's Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, featuring comedian Conan O'Brien's description of the bridge as resembling a phallic object held up by wires. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation stated that the sign was not part of any official project and was subsequently removed. The sign generated buzz on Reddit, where users made jokes about its content and Boston's history of unusual monuments. O'Brien's original remarks about the bridge date back to May 2020 during the pandemic.
A guerilla street sign recently popped up near Boston's Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, immortalizing Brookline native Conan O'Brien's poetic description of the iconic infrastructure. The sign read "This bridge looks like a ***** that's being held up by wire," referring to a certain part of the male anatomy.
The sign’s appearance was first reported by The Boston Globe. The somewhat official-looking marker turned heads on Reddit's r/boston page, prompting remarks such as "Stay classy, Boston" from users.
A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation clarified that MassDOT was not behind the marker, stating, "The sign in question is not part of any DOT project, nor was it installed as part of the North Washington Street project."
O'Brien's artful description of the Zakim Bridge dates back to May 2020, when the late-night comedian was filming remotely during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
