What to know about the dead pigeons at the MBTA's JFK/UMass station
""It might only be a pigeon, but that was disgusting," says Stacie Delzingo, the founder of Safe Hands. "And it's cruelty.""
""That's a rough way to go," Delzingo said. "And, right out in the open.""
A commuter filmed dead pigeons hanging upside down through ceiling slats at the MBTA JFK/UMass Red Line station and captured a baby pigeon squeaking for food. Volunteers from Safe Hands Wildlife Rescue Network coordinated with MBTA personnel to attempt a rescue, but delays resulted in the fledgling's death. Volunteers found a hole in the station ceiling that allowed pigeons to nest above the rafters, where some fledglings fell and became stuck upside down with heads protruding. MBTA crews will clear the area above the ceiling and later seal the openings. Volunteers identified the birds as juveniles by yellow chick feathers.
