Project Oscar has expanded into Beacon Hill, Fenway, and the West End, increasing its total to 20 compost bin locations. The initiative allows residents to drop off food waste for free, responding to feedback for greater accessibility. The city has collected over 108,000 pounds of food scraps this year, which are processed by Black Earth Compost for resale to local farmers. While curbside composting is offered, it is unavailable to residents in large buildings over six units, who are encouraged to use neighborhood bins.
"We've gotten a lot of feedback that residents want more of these bins, and they would like them to be more accessible. We've really been listening to folks and just understanding, like what's working for them and like where they would like them to be."
"So far this year, the city has collected more than 108,000 pounds of food scraps. Black Earth Compost collects the scraps to make compost, which the New England company then sells the compost to local farmers."
