"The younger generations are drinking less. They're socializing less. Everybody can afford a 75 inch TV in the dorm room now, they don't need to go out and go to a social hangout to watch the football game, and things are getting more expensive."
"The liability insurance structure in this state and many others is broken. Our insurance carrier was canceling us, and it's getting out of business as a whole. Liquor liability insurance protects businesses from being financially responsible for alcohol based accidents, like injuries or deaths."
"The system is broken, but it's not their fault. The bar's location has been standing since the 1980s and was originally named Our House East, affectionately dubbed OHE. The name and ownership changed to Two Saints Tavern after Hitchcock and his partners bought the business in 2017."
Two Saints Tavern, a popular dive bar near Northeastern University on Gainsborough Street, will permanently close this weekend after nearly a decade of operation. The bar's managing partner Chuck Hitchcock attributes the closure to rising liquor liability insurance costs and structural problems in the insurance industry, as their carrier Berkshire Hathaway Guard discontinued coverage for businesses exceeding certain thresholds. Additionally, younger generations are drinking and socializing less, preferring to stay home with entertainment options like large televisions rather than visiting social venues. The bar, originally opened in the 1980s as Our House East, became Two Saints Tavern in 2017 under new ownership including Dropkick Murphys lead singer Ken Casey. Despite offering diverse amenities including dancing, DJ services, dart boards, and karaoke, the business could not sustain operations amid these economic and social pressures.
