Starting June 1, select travelers departing Boston Logan Airport will be able to complete TSA screening at a remote location in Framingham to reduce congestion inside the terminal and at drop-off points. The pilot is part of TSA’s “straight to gate” program, approved for eight airports, but initially tested at one Framingham site about 25 miles from Logan. The service will be available only to Delta or JetBlue passengers departing between 5:30am and 4pm. After check-in and security clearance, passengers take a $9 shuttle to the airport, with the last shuttle at 11am. Off-site parking costs $7 per day.
"Starting on June 1, travelers flying out of Logan Airport in Boston will be able to skip the security lines at the terminal by getting a pat-down and bag check at a remote location. The TSA aims to relieve congestion inside the terminal and at drop-off points, using an off-site screening approach that moves the security process away from the busiest areas."
"The initiative could expand to eight airports approved for TSA’s “straight to gate” pilot program, but for now it’s being tested at a location in Framingham, MA, about 25 miles from Logan. It’s also less than a mile from three Dunkin’ spots, and initially it will only be for Delta or JetBlue passengers departing Logan between 5:30am and 4pm."
"Once you check in and clear security, a $9 shuttle will take you to the airport. The last 45-minute shuttle (or longer in rush hour) is at 11am. Parking at the off-site facility is $7 per day, and you and your checked bags will be dropped beyond the security lines that still hold passengers waiting to get through screening."
"With airports running out of room to build, off-site screening is becoming more necessary. The remote approach is positioned as a practical way to keep passenger flow moving while reducing bottlenecks at terminal security and drop-off points, especially during peak travel hours."
