The MBTA announced the South Coast Rail will launch passenger service on March 24, 2024, after multiple delays since its inception in 2019. This new service connects major cities like Taunton and New Bedford to Boston, allowing a direct trip for the first time in over 60 years. The service includes 32 daily trips between South Station and East Taunton and is part of an effort to reduce congestion and promote economic growth in southeastern Massachusetts. Fares will be set at $12.25 for a full ticket.
The people of Taunton, Freetown, New Bedford, Middleboro and Fall River have been waiting for passenger rail service for far too long.
The rail will reduce congestion and spur economic development.
Trains will run every 70 minutes on weekdays and every two hours on weekends, with a total of 32 trips between South Station and East Taunton daily.
Passenger service, which kicks off March 24, extends commuter rail access to areas that lost it 65 years ago.
