Seamark at Encore Boston to close, less than a month after workers unionize
"While the team remained optimistic that improving market conditions in 2025 and into 2026 would allow the business to turn the corner, those expectations ultimately did not materialize. As the first quarter of 2026 comes to a close, ownership determined that continuing operations was no longer economically sustainable."
"Less than a month ago, I was with my co-workers listening to them sing me 'Happy Birthday' as we celebrated our vote to unionize. I could see a better future for my co-workers, my family, and my dad, who I am the primary caregiver for. I can't believe Carver Road and Seamark didn't allow us to come to the table and partner in ways to make this restaurant the best it can be for all of us."
Seamark Seafood & Cocktails, a high-end seafood restaurant at Encore Boston Harbor casino, is closing on March 29, laying off 56 workers. The restaurant's ownership attributed the closure to economic challenges, stating that expected market improvements in 2025 and 2026 did not materialize. However, UNITE HERE Local 26 labor union claims the closure is retaliatory against workers who voted to unionize less than a month prior. Workers voted 38-7 to join the union, with results certified earlier in the month. Negotiations for the first contract had not yet begun. A server expressed devastation about the sudden job loss and uncertainty regarding financial obligations.
