Police: Bus driver in Medford crash may have been asleep at the wheel
"We allege the operator exhibited signs and body language consistent with an individual to be, at a minimum drowsy, or asleep throughout the lead up to the collision. We allege the operator did not apply the brakes prior to the collision."
"investigators 'do not believe alcohol and or other intoxicating substances is a factor' in the March 8 crash, Transit Police Supt. Richard Sullivan said Friday."
"Sullivan alleged that while operating the 95 bus prior to the crash, the driver repeatedly crossed over the double yellow lines in the road and ran a red light at the Interstate 93 offramp on the Somerville-Medford line."
An MBTA bus driver, 40 years old, crashed a Route 95 bus into parked vehicles and the front steps of a Medford home on March 8. Transit Police investigators determined the driver appeared drowsy or asleep before the collision and did not apply brakes. The driver repeatedly crossed double yellow lines and ran a red light prior to the crash. Investigators ruled out alcohol and intoxicating substances as factors. Weather conditions were clear with temperatures between 49-51 degrees. The driver faces charges including negligent operation, failing to stop at a red light, and marked lanes violation. The driver has been suspended from duty.
