Part of Mass Pike closed due to crack near I-495, officials say
Briefly

Westbound lanes of the Mass Pike near Interstate 495 were closed for urgent repairs after a significant crack was discovered early Friday. Massachusetts Department of Transportation alerted to the issue acted swiftly to prevent potential sinkhole risks. The ongoing $440 million construction project at the I-495/I-90 interchange is linked to soil movement that contributed to the problem. Detours are in effect, with expected delays, but officials noted public cooperation in managing traffic disruptions.
"There was the risk of a major sinkhole opening up, something that we obviously didn't want to put traffic onto," Gulliver said.
"Although very difficult, it has been a manageable detour for most of the day, and we continue to appreciate the public cooperation with us," Gulliver said.
