Officials: Newly opened Mass Pike ramp will decrease traffic congestion

"A newly constructed ramp connecting the Mass Pike to I-495 in central Massachusetts opened overnight Monday, ahead of the Tuesday morning commute. Previously, motorists accessed all I-495 exits from a single point. Under the new system, those traveling I-90 westbound and heading for I-495 southbound will encounter the first exit, with a second exit following for those merging onto I-495 northbound, according to an advisory from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation."

"The previous "deficient" layout of the road caused traffic for the more than 100,000 vehicles passing through I-90 and I-495 on an average day, leading to backups on the mainlines and increased crash rates, a MassDOT spokesperson told Boston.com. "As part of the complete rebuild, the new interchange will have improved acceleration and deceleration lanes, more efficient travel through the area, and can more safely accommodate a higher volume of vehicles," the spokesperson said."

"The new I-90 westbound to I-495 southbound ramp aims to improve safety and alleviate traffic congestion, according to MassDOT officials. The ramp also will benefit travelers sooner by enhancing the transit experience for this summer's events, including the seven World Cup matches scheduled in Foxborough, the spokesperson noted. The entire project of I-90 and I-495 improvements in that region is slated for completion by summer 2028."

"To assist motorists navigating the new ramp, MassDOT officials said signage and messaging will be provided. Officials warned that delays should be anticipated at first and advised drivers to maintain reduced speed and caution."
