Northeastern University intends to replace the historic Matthews Arena with a 290,000 square foot facility for sports events, including an arena, field house, and other amenities supporting athletic needs.
Matthews Arena, the world's oldest multi-purpose athletic building, is considered 'more than a century old and reaching the end of its useful life' by the university.
The replacement project will include site improvements like street trees, pedestrian enhancements, and public realm upgrades to cater to Northeastern's growing demand for modern athletic facilities.
The university is in the initial stages of exploring new options with the Boston Planning and Development Agency to address the increased need for state-of-the-art athletic and recreational facilities on the Boston campus.
