MFA Boston will lay off 33 employees amid rising deficit and restructuring
""in an unsustainable deficit that we have committed to resolve""
""Unfortunately, we have determined that in order to move toward financial sustainability, we will need to implement a restructuring that will result in a reduction in our workforce.""
""The union only learned about the layoffs at the MFA late in the day yesterday,""
""We expect to meet and bargain with the museum over this matter to see if there are ways to avert layoffs and retain the workplace diversity that is the strength of our institution.""
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston announced on 27 January that it will lay off 33 employees, affecting about 6.3% of its roughly 520-person workforce, with cuts effective 30 January. The museum cited an "unsustainable deficit" and said restructuring is required to move toward financial sustainability, resulting in workforce reduction. Sixteen of the eliminated positions are represented by United Auto Workers Local 2110, which said it received one day's notice and was only recently informed which members were on the layoff list. The union plans to seek bargaining and information on alternatives to layoffs. The museum previously enacted staff cuts in 2020.
