"For better or worse - and most observers believe it will be the latter, at least for the short term - the Bruins are entering a new era. The B's are coming off their first losing season in nine years and, unlike the 2015-16 B's, who barely missed the postseason, the DNQ of the 2024-25 B's was a no-doubter that brought about the sale of a handful of stalwarts and a last-place finish in the Atlantic Division."
"Also notable was the presence of David Pastrnak, the longest tenured Bruin and resident superstar. Pastrnak had always wanted to eke out a few more days back home in Europe and was often a no-show at these non-mandatory days. But while he downplayed his early return as being multi-faceted - he and his family are possibly looking for a new home - there is no doubt that there will be added responsibility this season."
"Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, the last remaining Bruins who were part of the 2019 that went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals (Sean Kuraly was also on that team but he's returning after spending four seasons in Columbus), are expected to be wearing A's this year as alternate captains while a third A will rotate. While Pastrnak and McAvoy will no doubt be the focal point of the team's leadership, there will also be an emphasis on growing that leadership group."
The Bruins finished with their first losing season in nine years and ended the 2024-25 campaign as last in the Atlantic Division after clearly missing the playoffs and moving several veteran players. Brad Marchand, the last link to the 2011 Stanley Cup team, was traded to the Florida Panthers. Captains' practice drew sufficient attendance to stage a scrimmage despite some absences, and David Pastrnak returned early from Europe amid personal house-hunting and increased team responsibilities. Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy are expected to wear alternate captain letters while a third alternate rotates. The organization intends to expand its leadership group.
