Council President Ruthzee Louijeune stated that the resolution is just reinforcing existing laws, expressing that the City Council collectively supports the immigrant community through the Trust Act.
The Boston Trust Act, originally enacted in 2014, aims to strengthen the connection between immigrant communities and local police by laying out parameters for cooperation with ICE.
Under the Trust Act, Boston Police are instructed to work with ICE only in significant public safety cases, and do not inquire about immigration status.
Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized that local law enforcement is not required to engage in mass deportation of residents without serious criminal backgrounds.
