"A large chunk - estimated to be six to eight feet long - of railing snapped off "without warning," causing the students to lose their balance and fall onto the concrete below, police said. Both landed on the back of their heads and spine with "significant force," officers wrote."
"Officers investigated the railing and portions of the deck and noticed rotting wood and "short corroded nails," police said. The wood appeared to be painted over, which may have concealed the extent of the damage, police said."
Two Boston College students were injured at a Brighton house party when a section of second-floor deck railing broke while they leaned against it. The railing, estimated at six to eight feet long, snapped without warning, causing both students to fall onto concrete below with significant force. One student suffered head bleeding and severe back and neck pain. Police investigation revealed the deck had rotting wood and corroded nails that had been painted over, likely concealing structural damage. The students had been using the deck throughout the evening to access the kitchen for food and beverages.
