The year 2023 saw record levels of book bans and declining reading rates among children. However, publishers and editors are optimistic about the future, citing a continued influx of talent and creativity in book submissions.
"I always feel positive when I start a new year!" says Sonali Fry, v-p and publisher of Crown Books for Young Readers.
Publishers and editors are encouraged by the type and quality of stories being submitted, as well as the authors' willingness to push boundaries and try new things.
"The pattern of authors pushing themselves beyond familiar categories and genres...makes me look forward to my work in the year to come," says Andrew Karre, senior executive editor at Dutton Children's Books.
